Introduction

Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter game, released in 2007 and developed by Infinity Ward.
The game is highly rated in general and considered by many to be the best Call of Duty game in the series. The game reached has been sold worldwide, and the top-selling point was at 2007, selling around 7 million copies by mid January.
The multiplayer section features both team-based and deathmatch-based modes on all maps available. When holding killstreaks, the player unlocks UAV reconnaissance scans (3), air strikes (5) and attack helicopters (7).
Everyone's progress is tracked with experience points, which can be earned by killing the opponents. As the playe gains experience, they will raise a level. The highest obtainable level is 55, but on consoles, they are allowed to enter "Prestige" mode, which returns them to the first level and no more unlockables. The process can be done 10 times to earn a new insignia each time.

Call of Duty 4 runs on the IW engine 3.0. The main differences are true world-dynamic lightning, dynamic shadows, HDR lightning effects and depth of field adjustment. Bullet penetration is calculated by the engine, and since the first time in the CoD series, they now account factors such as surface type and entity thickness. Bullet stopping power is decreased after penetrating an object, and the decrease is dependent on the thickness and surface type of the object. Resulting in a more realistic experience. The game also uses a dynamic physics engine, not previously seen in other CoD games.

Patches

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare v1.7 Patch (currently most used)
Fixes an exploit that allowed players to access certain console dvars, also fixed a crash that could occur when a Chinatown or Sabotage match would go into over-time. Bugged MP icons are fixed too.
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare v1.6 Patch
A new map pack is introduced, including 4 new multiplayer maps. Fixes a server crash exploit and other bug fixes, and introduces a few additional features.
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare v1.5 Patch
Upgrades 1.4 to 1.5, only for multiplayer.
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare v1.4 Patch
Improves mod support, server browser. Fixes the bullet accuracy, and adds a holiday-version of the Crash multiplayer map.
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare v1.3 Patch
Fixes the issue where files could by bypassed on a pure client.
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare v1.2 Patch
General bug fixes reported by the community.
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare v1.1 Patch
Fixes the issue of rank / stat resets when users moved from a modded or un-ranked server to an original server.

Modding

There are mods available for this game.

The software to create those mods and maps is called "CoD4 Mod Tools" the latest version is v 1.1

The average filesize of this archive is pending between 600 and 700 MB.

Server

Server Files

The server files are installed with the patch install. You could start your local server from the main menu, be sure ports are forwarded if you'd like others to connect who are not in the same local network.

Game Hacking

Information

The IW engine 3.0 remains a heavily edited idTech3 engine. The best resource would be to study the Q3 SDK / source. However, there is a leaked PDB file available from the alpha builds at http://www.unknowncheats.me/downloads/downloads.php?do=file&id=7362. This file could be used as reference to speed up the reversing progress.
