I recently got an iPhone 3Gs, and wanted to explore this world of jailbreaking. I would like the ability to tether my iPhone to my laptop in order to use 3g internet on my lappy when I'm away from the home.
I wanted to know of any success or failure (bricked ) stories you guys may have. Also, I've been reading around and it sounds like 95% of bricked iPhones can be restored.
I am currently looking at the spirit jailbreak (my iPhone is on os 3.1.3) but if you know of a better (less likely to brick) jailbreak please let me know.

I've been jailbreaking my iPhone for over a year now and no problems. The new 3.1.3 update(was useless to even update to) you will need to get spirit.
I just jailbroke mine the other day and it look less than 3 minutes to do it successful. The only bad thing about Spirit is it removes your pictures for some odd reasons. So backup any pictures cause I lost 800+ of mine .
Anyways its well worth it. Here is a SS of my background I have. They have well over a thousand themes to pick from.
As for the tethering I have not tried that. But if you need any help with jailbreaking let me know

I have no problem paying for this app, unless you have a free alternative
Anyways, I'm wondering how hard it is to go back to official apple os software from a jailbreak. Also, do you have issues with instability?

Spirit is the only public jailbreak solution available for the 'new model' 3GS 3.1.3 because of the iBoot/bootrom version. If you have a old model 3GS 3.1.3 (non-MC model) then you can use Sn0wbreeze. I'm guessing you bought this iPhone on 3.1.3 so it will not be a old model though, and unless you saved the SHSH blobs in the past you can not downgrade firmware. Spirit is a userland exploit also and can be patched in future, it also will not unlock your devices carrier.
I'm pretty deep in jailbreaking, I have some applications (for JB devices) for sale in the Cydia Store (no names mentioned). If you want a 'proper' community to find all the information you need and could ever want, then send me a private message and I will link you to the best.
Also, MyWi is what you need, people use it for tethering the iPhone to there none 3G iPad these days. And the community I will show you will let you bypass the buy factor for basically everything.

Yeah true, I've been away from my main PC so I just went over to a friends to jailbreak. Never thought about backing up anything since I've never had a problem. But I guess you learn from your mistakes. I sent you a pm
Is jail breaking simalar to rooting? I dont have a iphone either. I have a htc eris and there is software that can be downloaded via the market to use your phone as a modem without rooting. If thats all you want to do.
I have had my iPod Touch 2nd gen jailbroken for almost a year now. It is HIGHLY unlikely you will brick your iProduct if you have a) common sense b) follow the directions....

In simplest terms, yes rooting is similar to jailbreaking. I have the Motorola Droid rooted. It is very handy.

I dont know what rooting is exactly, or what it does for you, but I recently installed the non OTA 2.1 update, and I really dont see much diff exept for cosmetics. I kept hearing about how snappy every thing was and how much faster. I dont see any thing faster, just diff graphics and maybe a few diff improvments in some programs. Nothing spectaculer in speed or battery usage. How about you?
I know this is off topic, but damn "Traffic", that little bug really annoys me, lol.

I think the main people root for is to add ROMs for visual enhancements. The only main thing I use is an Overclock tool. Overclocks when the screen is on; underclocks when the screen is off. Improves my battery life.

If this is for the iPhone can you tell me the name of the app?
My jailbreak was successful, this really opens up a world of possibilities and I am very happy I did this. I have changed my theme a ton since I took those screenshots, but the layout is generally the same.
And about using your phone's internet, I don't have to pay a dime extra in order to tether my phone, where at&t charges to tether their other phones.
