Before you go off on a rant against me, hear me out.
Recently, IRC has become relatively active, with people talking at least 12+ out of 24 hours in the day. Due to this, people have began "acting out." Last night, we had our first incident that nearly cost us some very valued and respected members of the IRC. With this in mind, I've decided, as an upper level staff member of IRC, that I'd like to outline some rules. Again, before you go off bashing me for "limiting your fun," or even contradicting myself, I'd like to say this: These rules are not going to limit anything, just prevent people from being offended. I simply want IRC to be a more "friendly" experience for anyone who joins, and for people to respect that. I plan on enforcing these rules as leniently as possible, and I truly mean that.
As many of you may know, my past "experiences" with authority in IRC has been less than friendly. I've been one of the most difficult people to enforce the rules upon, due to my thinking they're "dumb" or "unfair." With this in mind, I'm leaving every rule written here to be up for debate. If people state a viable reason as to why the rule should not be followed, then I will absolutely remove it. And, again, I'm not here to ban everyone--I just want to make IRC a more decent experience. If someone is breaking a rule in a non-offensive context, then go right ahead.
Here are the rules I've come up with (thus far [still up for debate and/or suggestion]):
1. Keep the racism/antisemitism to a minimum. I don't mean "joking around" with racism, I mean actual racism. If you're going off on a rant as to why Jews are one way(in poor context), or that black people are another, then you're breaking a rule. If you're having a laugh, or doing it in a way that is not intended to truly be offensive, then that is something entirely different.
2. Show respect to other members. Again, if you're joking around, that is fine. If you're bashing someone for having a different opinion, or rank, than you're breaking the rule.
3. Do not spam. I don't mean writing "asdfhkjsdf" randomly, or talking about something unrelated, I mean filling the entire page with useless information, the same link, pictures made from text, designs, or anything done in excess. Yes, I do this all the time--and, as a result, I can't be too harsh on this. I won't ban someone for writing "lol" ten times in a row. That's not a big deal. I will ban someone for sending the same link 20+ times in a row, or drawing a massive swastika in text.
4. Don't kick excessively, or without reason. Again, if it's a joke kick, it's fine. If you're kicking someone every ten seconds, who does not deserve it, that's just being a dick. I'll be forced to act upon that.
5. Do not spam scripts. This is the most important thing. Yes, we do have .fml and .urban, and yes, they are fun. But, that doesn't mean you can write ".fml" twenty-times in a row. And, no, that does not mean you can write ".urban Neo_Reloaded" forty times, just because you think it's funny. Use your brain. If you think it's going to be excessive and "spammy," then don't do it.
6. Do not abuse power. Staff of IRC are there not just to have cool symbols next to their name, but to enforce rules. Remember that you're holding a position of power and, if need be, will have to enforce the rules if you see them being broken. Do NOT be rule nazis about it, just enforce when needed. Anyone seen abusing their power will be talked to. Punishment, if seen fit, may follow. Again, joke kicking is not abusing power. Banning someone you don't like for no real reason is.
7. Do not talk about Fight Club.
8. Avoid posting links to material that others may find offensive (including gore, racism, extreme porn). By that, I mean not to do it in excess, or when someone is legitimately bothered by it. Putting a disclaimer before the link (such as: "WARNING: GORE," "NSFW," "Quicktime's Personal Porn Colletion [QPPC]," etc.) is perfectly all right. Just try not to offend people, generally speaking.
9. There are to be no fans of Twilight in the IRC channel at ANY time.
As you can see, these are, by no means, extremely strict rules. In fact, calling them rules is almost too harsh. They're more "guidelines" for you to follow to engage in typical conversation. If you use your brain while typing, you won't break any of the rules. You actually have to go out of your way in order to do so. And, again, I'm not here to enforce them or ban people, I'm here just like you--to have a good time. I really don't like banning people, and I don't want to be a police officer. If you're having a good time, then I am not going to enforce anything. If you're deliberately being a dick, you're forcing me to take action. I'd prefer to laugh.
Punishment may be as follows (staff members may skip a step or pick and choose which to use):
1. A verbal warning.
2. Being kicked, as a warning.
3. Being banned for a decided amount of time (which shall be chosen by the staff member enforcing the punishment).
4. Being permanently banned from IRC.
5. Being permanently banned from IRC and UC.
Every rule here (except for #7) is debatable. If you have a reason why something should be removed, or an exception, then please post here (and why). Also, if you have any more suggestions, then I'd love to hear them and, possibly, add them.
As a little note: I still want IRC to be the same. I love Quicktime's nazi speak, Alkie's racism, Neo's random letters--don't change a thing. I want IRC to be comedically offensive and random. I do not, however, want people to be trying to offend another person. In that sense, IRC will not change--I simply want people to use their brains when writing something, or spamming something. There is nothing new coming to IRC, just a written list of things we all already tried to follow.
Staff in IRC, as well, will remain the same, as we've had no real problems with them before. No one is being watched.
Thanks for your time, see you guys in IRC.

i like the structure, the site has rules and so should irc.. I personally stopped visiting the irc channel because of admins finding it funny to continually kick people.. Once this is in affect i wouldn't mind chatting it up on irc again.

Excellent job XIII. It is great to see that you (and all IRC staff) are trying to keep IRC fun for everyone and make it a better place, and that you've generated the rules based on the current issues we are having on IRC.
I've just replaced Max_Power's previous sticky with this thread simply because you have done a much better job on elaborating upon each rule. It would be nice if you could keep these rules updated over time, adding more when it becomes necessary. Thanks again for your work.
I'll let it slide, since I broke rule #7 almost immediately after posting it.

this is single handedly the only thing that has bothered me in the past 6 months in irc outside of some exceptional retards. Also the .fml scripts etc really should just be dropped from the channel.
What the fuck is this automerge bullshit

Okay, I'm going to add that links of this nature should not be posted in excess or without a disclaimer. I know that some people (myself included) don't want to see sand inserted into someone's rectum (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, QUICKTIME :3).

Thread is turning into nothing but a rant. Might as well add only formal sentence structure as well.
Don't test me, I would love having grammar rules enforced.

After the discovery that a user in the IRC channel was, in fact, a fan of Twilight, we have decided to add another rule to the list:
9. There are to be no fans of Twilight in the IRC channel at ANY time.
Source for rule:
