Getting required ID3DXBaseMesh

Bit confused on this topic and i'm in need of some info on collecting the games mesh information in preperation for a Intersect function.
The mesh being first parameter.

Not a fan of using the engine for such data collection.
So i'll be using DirectX for my Intersection check between viewport and target.
Don't know a great deal about how a game's mesh information is collected.

Prehaps there is a better alternative to this method or a better ray cast function?

for vis checks i prefer the game's own function(s), because that incorporates (mostly) transparant textures like a grate from a fence

To me finding that sort of function is going to be like finding a needle in a hay stack and not knowing what the needle actually looks like. All of the games I enjoy playing with don't have an SDK.
